Technical Details

Identifying the photographer of these photos is impossible in most cases. Neither William nor Philinda owned a camera, so all these photos were given to them. Unfortunately, the photographer is not identified except in two cases. William notes on the back of Photo L_08 that it and several others were taken by Mr. [Perry N.] Jester, William's boss and head of the American Consulate until early June, 1942. It's not clear which other photos were taken by Mr. Jester, but we may assume that they include many of the other photos of Lagos people taken before he left. There are many photos dated after Mr. Jester's departure, none of which indicates the photographer.

The excellent photos of the Sala ceremony in Kano were taken by a professional photographer on the staff of the U. S. Office of War Information (O.W.I.). Most of these 8 x 10 inch prints were sent to William's family in letter 1943-07-31 L-55 WLK to LMKf, in which he mentions that they were taken by O.W.I. staff, but does not include the name(s).

Most of the photos are black and white or sepia prints 100 x 76 mm (4 x 3 inches). These snapshots were scanned at 600 dpi for high resolution detail, but the digital results are not always what I had hoped for, especially in the "close-ups". The major exceptions are the OWI photos, whose prints are 255 x 205 mm (10 x 8 inches); these I scanned at 300 dpi, and these digitized very satisfactorily.
