1942: Year of Yearning

Warning

All the 1942 letters between William and Philinda are love-letters! Even though they discuss lots of practical details, they are sentimental, mushy, and very intense. Though there is no reference to sex, they are very frank about private feelings. They are released in public only because the two lovers have now been reunited beyond the grave.

When Philinda parted from William in 1941, neither had any idea it would be 15 months before they were reunited. In fact, they spent 1942 in a constant struggle to overcome their separation. There were many obstacles...

  1. Philinda's marriage to Jimmie Jones. She needed a divorce before she and William could marry. Divorces were not easy to obtain in 1942.
  2. Permission for Philinda to leave the United States. Not easy during wartime.
  3. An occupation in Lagos. Without a job, an unmarried woman would not be allowed to leave the U.S. or enter Nigeria. Because of the uncertainty about the struggle with Axis forces in northern Africa, central Africa was an important staging area, considered by many authorities to be part of the War Zone.
  4. Transportation.
    • Air travel was possible only for personnel with authorization by the War Shipping Administration, which controlled flow of goods and people to the War Zone
    • Allied vessels were in great danger of submarine attack. For many months, William absolutely forbade Philinda to consider taking passage on an allied vessel. And even by sea, they discovered that passage on an allied vessel also required permission from the War Shipping Administration.
    • By sea on a neutral vessel was much safer, but neutral vessels did not call at Lagos. Portuguese vessels could cross from New York to Lisbon fairly safely, but how then to get to Lagos? Several possibilities were considered, almost adopted, and finally rejected.

1942 Chronology

  • At the New Year Philinda is staying with her mother, Dorothy Strahorn (Campbell) Middleton, and step-father, James A. Middleton, in their modest home at 761 Scotland Road, Orange, New Jersey. (Letter 1942-01-04)
William is in Lagos, Nigeria; working under the supervision of Consul Perry N. Jester. Initially William lives in a small, rented room, but soon moves into the apartment above the U. S. Consulate, 4 Broad Street, Lagos. (Letter 1942-01-10)
  • January 11 Philinda leaves New Jersey and travels to Miami, Florida, because she has learned it will be easier to get a divorce there, and because she much prefers warm weather. She rents a room in a nice house at 222 Phoenetia Avenue, in the Coral Gables area, and starts job-hunting. (Letter 1942-01-17)
  • February 14 Philinda announces that she has been given a position at Pan American Airways (Letter 1942-02-14)
  • May 5 Philinda moves to a small house at 3071 Indiana Street, Coconut Grove, which is nearer to her work (Letter 1942-05-10)
  • June: William's boss in Lagos, Consul Perry Jester, returns to Washington and is replaced by Consul General Harold Shantz. (Letter 1942-06-10)
  • July 16 William is temporarily assigned to help at the U. S. Consulate in Accra, Gold Coast (now Ghana). (Letter 1942-08-02)
  • July 28 Philinda receives the decree divorcing her from Jimmie Jones (Letter 1942-07-28)
  • August 26 Philinda receives a passport, allowing her to proceed to Nigeria if she can find a way to get there. (Letter 1942-08-26)
At William's suggestion, Philinda writes to Consul Perry Jester, William's former boss in Nigeria, asking for advice and help in getting her to Lagos. (Letter 1942-08-26)
  • August 26 William returns to his primary assignment at Lagos. (Letter 1942-08-27)
  • August or September A newspaper article in Miami features Philinda as passenger service representative of Pan American Airways (Clipping 1942-09-08)
  • September 8 A U. S. Army Air Corp bomber crashes into Newark, Ohio, half a block from William's family home, killing at least 7 people. William's family safe. (Clipping 1942-09-08 and letter 1942-09-09)
  • September 18 After trying in every way she can to use her status as a Pan American Airways employee to fly to Lagos on a Pan Am flight, Philinda gives up. She resigns from her position with Pan Am and decides to return to New Jersey, where she can work on various sea passage possibilities and also apply for a position with the American government in Nigeria. (Letter 1942-09-18)
  • November 24 Philinda writes about a visit to Washington, in which she meets Mr. and Mrs. Jester, is interviewed at the State Department for a clerical position (with Mr. Jester's blessing) and talks to various other government offices about positions in Lagos. (Letter 1942-11-24)
  • November 25 Philinda is appointed Clerk in the American Foreign Service Auxiliary, assigned to the American Consulate at Lagos, Nigeria. (Letter 1942-11-25)
  • December 3 Perry Jester sends letters to several officials, trying to help Philinda find a way to get to Lagos. (Letter 1942-12-03)
  • December 10 Philinda's Special Passport arrives, giving her State Department employee status to obtain transport to Nigeria. (Passport)
  • December 22 Philinda sails on M/S Siranger from New York. Siranger is a Norwegian vessel chartered by the American West African Line (also known as the Barber Line) to carry cargo and passengers to Nigeria. She arrives in Nigeria on February 5, 1943.
