1943, Year of Fulfillment
1943 must rank as one of the happiest years in William and Philinda's lives.
Despite the privation, destruction, and death of World War II raging around them,
Lagos was peaceful, with only moderate lack of food and drink, and plenty of friendly people.
Best of all, after February 5, William and Philinda had each other.
There was lots of intense work for both at the American Consulate General,
and social life got a bit hectic in the evenings,
but there was usually a trip to the beach on Saturday and Sunday
with good food, good surfing, good company, and welcome relaxation.
Both enjoyed good health with the exception of a few days of tropical illness,
after which they returned to apparent vigor.
They even managed to get away from Lagos for a good two weeks excursion
to the interior of Nigeria.
1943 Chronology
- At the New Year William was hard at work in Lagos, knowing Philinda was on her way,
though naturally concerned for her safety aboard a ship in waters infested with submarines.
(Letter 1943-01-14)
Meanwhile, Philinda was cruising through the Caribbean near Aruba aboard M/S Siranger,
sailing in company with Convoy GAT 33 (Guantanamo to Trinidad via Aruba)
For the complete story of Philinda's voyage to Lagos,
please see the Family History document by that name.
- January 4-15 Philinda and fellow passengers enjoy nearly two weeks in
Port of Spain, Trinidad, while Siranger
awaits a convoy to take her south and east.
(Letter 1943-01-11)
- January 15 Siranger departs Trinidad with Convoy TB 2 (Trinidad to Bahia, Brazil).
Two days later, she detaches from the convoy heading east toward Africa.
(Letter 1943-02-01)
- Thursday, February 4 Siranger arrives in Lagos Bay. Passengers spend one more night aboard
before being allowed to disembark.
(Ship's log (archived) )
- Friday, February 5 Hitching a ride on the Barber Line's Lagos tug, William goes out to Siranger and is
reunited with Philinda. Philinda is finally able to enter Nigeria, where she spends the night
at the home of Mrs. Vincent, a friend of William's.
(Letter 1943-02-11)
- Saturday, February 6 Philinda and William are married at First Baptist Church of Lagos,
Rev. Dr. Adair officiating.
Reception at Consul General Harold Shantz's residence.
(Certificate and
Letter 1943-02-11;
Mr. Shantz also wrote an announcement for publication in the Foreign Service Journal.)
- Monday February 8 - Tuesday February 9 Mini-honeymoon at the beach, Tarqua Bay, Lagos
(Letter 1943-02-20)
- Wednesday, February 10 Back to work for William; Philinda begins her new job as Clerk
at the American Consulate General, Lagos. Work is intense, but evening social life is brisk.
Social engagement is an important part of diplomatic life. Saturday and Sunday trips to the
beach "shack" belonging to the Consul General are a welcome relief.
(Letter 1943-02-25)
- Early May Philinda is hospitalized with a low fever (probably malarial)
(Letter 1943-05-05)
- July 12-30 William and Philinda travel by train to Bukuru, near Jos, Nigeria.
They stay at a guest house belonging to the manager of a tin mining operation
and meet many European and African residents of the area.
(Letter 1943-07-31)
- December 31 finds William and Philinda in Lagos, for the most part enjoying life.
However, Philinda has had a number of bouts of illness, including malaria and other
undiagnosed ailments. Though the year ends on an upbeat note, illness
will continue to afflict them and eventually force them to leave Nigeria just over a year after Philinda's arrival.
